The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is only second in size to Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Roatan is 40 miles long and at its widest its only 5 miles wide. It's a long and narrow island. Roatan's highest point is 900 ft above sea level. Roatan has an east-west orientation, and its northern and southern coastlines are both visible from several points on the island.

Costa Maya is a small tourist region in Mexico on the border with Belize, which until recently was British Honduras. The area is generally undeveloped but has a large pier with a new and modern tourist shopping mall to accommodate cruise ships. The centre has a central plaza with saltwater pools and 'swim-up' style bars.
