Where to explore in Alaska?
Juneau is the capital of Alaska and most voyages make a day visit here. Rather uniquely – for a state capital – Juneau can only be reached by air or sea. There are no roads in or out of the area, due to the towering mountains that frame the city.

When you’re in town, a ride up the Goldbelt Tram takes you to a viewing platform on Mount Roberts, where hiking trails head out in many directions for a relatively easy adventure. Or embrace your pioneer’s spirit and head to the Red Dog Saloon, where live music fills the wood-chip littered tavern, and an eclectic array of decorations make for a striking scene.

Further north – not all that far from Denali (North America’s highest mountain) – Whittier is an ideal city for experiencing the Prince William Sound. With a population of just 265 people, this small city is celebrated for its sensational scenery. Wildlife spotting, trekking, and glacier excursions are a popular attraction here. Military buffs should check out the local museum to discover more about the city’s abandoned military base, which was a secret outpost during World War II.
