Explora II ship review

The pride of Italy used to be a building with a slant on it. However, for a better taste of Italian build quality, there’s a new ship in town – the freshly christened Explora II. It’s exactly like the original Explora, but better writes Rachel Reilly

It’s hard not to hear Nino Rota’s haunting love theme when lazily exploring the plangent streets of Civitavecchia. The port’s sun-baked mantra radiates with rich culture and heritage.

You can feel the presence of previous generations to have passed through, and also of the iconic ships to have sliced across the skyline – the Andrea Doria, SS Leonardo da Vinci and SS Michelangelo to name only a few. Their shadows feel etched into the harbor walls.

And now there’s a fresh cruise ship destined to enhance Italy’s noble maritime vibe. Explora II, the newest vessel from Explora Journeys, was christened in a dazzling ceremony on September 14, 2024 before embarking on her maiden voyage around the Mediterranean’s Western regions.

To some, Explora II looks like the next step in cruise progression, but the ship represents far more than that.

Explora’s in-vogue neophyte pushes the cruise line directly into ‘fleet’ territory, but with a twist. Explora II shares DNA with her sister ship, but there’s an undercurrent of exclusive luxury that only Italy can bestow.

The 922-passenger cruise ship emits an energy largely bespoke to the cruise industry, too. There’s a big ‘family involvement’ from those who own the Explora brand.

The Aponte family boasts a history of seafaring that dates back to the 17th century, founding the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) in 1970. They know exactly which direction Explora Journeys is headed.

Rather than outsourcing such pleasures, the family curates all materials and artwork on board. The ship smells not just new, but akin to a Versace catwalk.

Textiles and furniture go hand-in-hand for the ultimate blend of fashion, impact and usability. Claiming a boutique cosmopolitan resort vibe makes for a bold statement, but Explora isn’t stopping there.

New ships are expected each year until 2026, representing an investment of €3.5 billion. There’s a cruise revolution coming, featuring crew-to-passenger ratios of 1.25:1, high levels of personal service, elegant comfort, dignified dining and a hull-load of boutique idiosyncrasies - onboard retailers include Rolex, Cartier and the first Buccellati outlet at sea.

The two ships have subtle differences between them, generated from passenger feedback. All comments were taken into account. Of course, these are some big claims, so World of Cruising stepped on board to discover exactly what’s on offer.

Style and character

Known for its sophisticated style, Explora Journeys boasts a spacious sense of serenity. Described as 'home at sea', Explora II’s modern interiors are handled with high-end materials, evoking a chic yet comfortable ambiance.Stepping into the foyer feels akin to entering Great Gatsby’s mansion – burnished postmodernism in a contemporary world.

Great slabs of marble and polished glass, swathes of leather, and sophisticated wood paneling create a five-star intramural. From the lavish dining spaces to the pacific wellness areas, every detail on Explora II is designed to reflect an understated yet luxurious aesthetic.

The ship's character embodies a refined, immersive experience where personalised service meets a sense of adventure. Everything is both plush and deeply engaging. With an emphasis on sustainability and comfort, this ship provides a laid-back, sophisticated atmosphere, ideal for those seeking to explore the world in style while enjoying world-class resources and attention to detail.

Perhaps one of the most defining characteristics comes from the seamless integration of modern amenities within a tranquil aura. The seraphic echo of affluent surroundings crafts an immersive atmosphere – with soulful room to hear your deepest thoughts, while reveling in champagne-clinked tête-à-tête.

If you need any one piece of evidence toward this dedicated nature, you need look no further than the high-caliber transactions that often take place aboard Explora’s fleet.

One tale showcases the efforts of an individual to purchase an original Andy Warhol when the artwork was featured in the Explora I gallery. That abundant reverb of indulgence oozes from every corner of Expora II. It’s magnificent.

Accommodation

Explora II offers four types of penthouse; Ocean, Deluxe, Premier and Grand. World of Cruising resided within a Deluxe penthouse, serving up 48 sqm of refined eminence.

Penthouse cabins are sizeable at 43 sqm, yet the interior design lends itself towards clever use of space and bright design, rather than any form of claustrophobia. The cabin feels much larger and comfortable than blueprint digits suggest. Premier Penthouse suites are larger (52 sqm), while the biggest cabin can be found in the Grand Penthouse (60 sqm).

Regardless of which cabin you opt for, you’ll discover a range of understated sophistication. Cosmopolitan minds have crafted a plethora of neutral colours that complement the incoming natural light. Furnishings haven’t come from a formula, but rather from the inherited skill of Aponte’s naked eye.

From large mirrors, a Godly television and floor-to-ceiling windows, to clever mood lighting, syncopated art sculptures and abstract prints, the cabins feel undeniably relaxed. The styling choices enhance the abode, rather than overpower it. Everything feels as though it belongs together. Ying and Yang, of the classiest order, with plenty of storage space for your clothing and items.

The family clearly held guests in lofty regard when designing the ship, making sure that Explora II felt like ‘home’ for their target demographic. Cabin quality is extremely high, and washroom fittings remain second-to-none. There’s underfloor heating in each bathroom, Dyson hair dryers, and plush Explora-branded bathrobes.

Showers are constructed from black and gray marble, and it’s not just a walk-in situation. Yes, there’s the commonplace rainfall/shower-head combo, but there’s also one big upgrade. There’s a bathtub available for decadent relaxation – something of a rarity in today’s cruise world. We very much approve.

Besides offering a walk-in dressing area, the bathroom is festooned with fragrant soaps, lotions, shampoos and conditioners, just to ensure everything is thought of. Back in the cabin, you’ll find champagne and drinking glasses neatly stashed in the cupboard, alongside a standing champagne bucket.

For those of a leafy-brewed persuasion, a kettle and porcelain espresso/tea cups compliment your own personal mini-library with a selection of books. There’s also a discreet safe located within the cabin, for storing all those onboard purchases.

Of course, you’ll need an area to curl up with a coffee and all that intuitive reading material. You can choose between the spacious balcony – which features a small bistro table – or the dining area, where two chairs, a chaise lounge and small coffee table await you.

Explora II’s cabin design-brief understandably revolved around ‘calming and soothing tones’, but there’s always a fine line between soothing and garish. Thankfully, the ‘G’ word has been avoided here. It’s a potent uniformity unmatched by other cruise lines, and sets a new standard moving forward.

The smaller Ocean suites are just as glamorous, and the layout feels well-calculated when it comes to space and storage. Explora’s trademark mirrors bestow the cabin with a generous mantra, paired with large windows that offer sterling views and an abundance of natural light.

Smaller cabins can often feel stuffy, but the Ocean suites feel somewhat palatial in comparison. These suits come in two sizes: Ocean terrace suites (35 sqm) and Ocean Grand Terrace Suites (11 sqm) – comes with a larger terrace.

All cabins come with incredibly comfortable beds, black-out curtains, a pair of binoculars, a bottle of champagne, wireless charging bases, and 24-hour concierge service with in-suite dining. The only thing to note for British travellers is the need for a plug converter, as the sockets only fit European and American devices.

Food and drink

As you would expect from Italy’s premium cruise line, chefs gravitate towards authenticity. If the ingredients aren’t fresh, or the meal doesn’t provide a full culinary experience, then it’s not leaving the kitchen.

The end result makes for some of the finest food we’ve ever encountered, and it’s remarkably easy to become addicted to mealtimes. We synchronised our watches with the kitchen’s activities, and we didn't even feel ashamed.

The Emporium Market Place is a particular highlight, serving up all-day casual dining within an incredibly cultivated setting. It’s not all Mediterranean menus, either. Prime features include a wide array of foods from all over the world – all cooked to perfection; each dish appears like its own work of art.

Each passenger is spoiled for choice. The intoxicating aroma that wafts from the carving station is hard to ignore, while the aesthetic appeal of fresh sushi will break almost all temptation. The charcuterie station – offering Italian cheeses and salami, olives and grapes – competes with a fromagerie for those seeking clean, simple flavours.

But of course, being proudly Italian, Explora II’s most emblematic fare remains the pizza and pasta station. These are highly sought after and the quality does not disappoint. There’s no judgment over your toppings, either, and the produce screams of true, authentic Italian delight – sliced and served straight out of a beautiful pizza oven. The pasta station had eight types of pasta. We didn’t even know that many existed!

There’s more to Explora II’s dining experience than that, however. For those seeking the perfect steak, ‘Marble & Co. Grill’ knocks it out the park. Dishing up heavenly plates of fine-cooked meat, the attention to detail stretches beyond the imagination.

The Grill is more than a restaurant, it’s a sense of occasion; dramatic marble decor and regal images of monochrome-clad farm life gives the eatery a fine blend of first-rate Manhattan distinction and European refinement.

For those seeking a taste of the orient, Sakura (translated as Cherry Blossom) redefines the concept of Asian-fusion. The ceiling is covered in glowing lanterns and blossom stems, complemented by shoji screens which pepper the areas between tables.

The whole set-up feels transported from Kyoto, and that before you even get near the food. Explora II’s chefs know their stuff, and the pan-Asian cuisine is, quite literally, to die for.

In all, there’s 18 different cooking stations on board the ship with ever-changing menus that utilise local ingredients and showcase native dishes from each port of call.

A total of six restaurants can be found throughout the decks, with only Anthology (Explora’s premium Italian restaurant) not included in your package cost. There’s an additional fee to eat here, but we’d completely recommend it.

As the final touch of Explora class, and something that would make John Steed and Emma Peel proud, champagne is available at all times – alongside an oyster champagne bar. This is where guests can meet to enjoy an aperitivo; a small drink to stimulate the appetite.

High-speed complimentary Wi-Fi can be found throughout the ship, alongside twice-daily housekeeping services, shoe-shining assistance, an evening turndown service and complimentary shuttles from port to excursion (when required/available).

You’ll also find a curated selection of exclusive fashion brands that align with the ship's sophisticated and luxurious atmosphere in the shopping gallery. You can explore collections from high-end designers such as Cartier, Panerai, and Piaget, offering stunning jewelry and timepieces. Additionally, the boutiques feature carefully selected pieces and brands from famed Italian fashion houses, allowing you to indulge in luxury shopping while at sea.

These brands are chosen to reflect the elegance and style of the Explora experience, giving you the opportunity to shop for timeless artefacts and accessories that perfectly complement your journey. Whether you're seeking a signature watch or a statement piece of jewelry, Explora II ensures that you have access to the finest global fashion offerings – all bearing the connected butterfly mark of assured quality.

It may come as a surprise from such a high-end cruise marque, but the Explora II has consequently been designed as a family-friendly ship. Children are more than welcome, with the Nautilus Club designed to keep the young – and the young at heart – entertained.

The kid’s zone is filled with activities and games that any child, teen would enjoy. Naturally, this area of the ship feels a tad more vibrant than the rest of the vessel, providing a fun, fresh and exciting atmosphere for younglings to relish. Not to mention video gaming courtesy of Playstation 5 and Nintendo Switch.

Entertainment

You can look forward to live performances in intimate settings, ranging from captivating music concerts to theatrical shows and cultural performances, all set in beautifully designed venues.

The ship features a small yet elegant casino, maintaining an atmosphere focused more on enrichment and relaxation rather than traditional cruise gaming options.

For those who enjoy quiet moments, there is a well-curated library offering a variety of literary genres, perfect for escaping into a good book while overlooking the sea. In addition, the ship hosts interactive art exhibitions, expert-led lectures, and workshops that invite guests to immerse themselves in enriching experiences.

Whether you’re looking for world-class entertainment or thoughtful cultural programming, Explora II offers a sophisticated, varied array of activities to suit every mood and interest.

Value for money

Cruising aboard Explora II delivers exceptional value for money, offering an all-inclusive luxury experience that goes beyond what most cruise lines provide. While the ticket cost may be higher than mainstream cruise lines, the premium price reflects the unparalleled level of service, the sophisticated atmosphere, and the attention to detail that define the Explora Journeys experience.

From spacious, ocean-facing suites with private terraces to exquisite dining prepared by world-class chefs, everything onboard is designed to provide the utmost in comfort and indulgence, all aimed at providing a bespoke, luxurious voyage.

Unlike traditional cruise lines, there are no hidden fees for high-end dining, drinks, or Wi-Fi. The focus is on enriching experiences like art exhibitions, live performances, and cultural workshops. The level of attention and thoughtfulness in every detail guarantees that your journey is more than just a vacation; it’s a transformative, memorable experience worth every penny.

Overall opinion? Explora II pushes the boat out. 10/10. Credit: Rachel Reilly
