The Carnival Corporation has signed an agreement to build and operate a new $50million cruise terminal on the island of Roatan, Honduras, to open in summer 2009.

Mahogany Bay will be situated on 20 acres on the waterfront and consist of a two-berth cruise terminal capable of accommodating super post-Panamax vessels and up to 7,000 passengers daily.

Adjacent to the facility will be a 35,000sq ft Welcome Center including retail shops, restaurants and bars, along with a 60ft lighthouse, a lagoon with cascading waterfalls, and a nature trail.

A transportation hub for taxis, rental cars and tour buses is also planned and a variety of shore excursion opportunities is being developed on the tropical island, which is distinguished by a lush landscape of rugged mountains with beautiful white-sand beaches and colourful coral reefs in the south-west Caribbean.
