Fancy waking up in a new port every day with the whole family in tow? Here are the best family-friendly cruises to book for your 2024 break

A cruise may not be the most obvious option for a family holiday but just because was, doesn't mean it is. Most ships are now equipped with everything from dry body slides to raft slides, and go-kart tracks which will keep both big and little kids alike occupied and entertained. Here are the best options for the year ahead...

SUN PRINCESS, PRINCESS CRUISES
Best for:Multi-generational travel
Princess Cruises is a favourite for multi-generational cruising with something to suit everyone, from Broadway-style theatre shows to delicious dining selections, relaxing spas, and one of the best shore excursion offerings at sea.

The kids' club programs are engaging – and cater to children from six months to 20 years old. (The ship even has a club for young adults aged 18-20 who will appreciate access to the fastest Wi-Fi at sea ensuring they can stay connected with their friends back home).

Elsewhere adventurous family members will love the brand-new top deck family activity zone featuring Sea Breeze, the first roll glider on a ship, and Coastal Climb – a fun, if challenging, climbing structure.

DISNEY TREASURE, DISNEY CRUISE LINE (Launching November 2024)
Best for:
A dose of Disney
In these grim times, everyone could do with a dose of Disney magic in their lives. If you've never set sail on a Disney cruise before, then Disney Treasure – which is set to launch in November 2024 – is the ship you need to have on your radar.

Expect character meet-and-greets, West-End style shows, dazzling deck parties, and spectacular firework displays. On the food front, fans of the cold stuff can indulge in around 20 different varieties of gelato and ice cream at Jumbeaux's Sweets. Will you work through them all together, or find your favourite and stick with it?

If you're not too full from indulging in all the sweet treats, you can try all-new adventures on Disney's Aqua Coaster – a thrilling ride boasting incredible special effects that you won't want to get off.

ROYAL CARIBBEAN ICON OF THE SEAS
Best for:
Tweens and teens
As its name suggests, this colossal 1,200 ft Royal Caribbean ship is iconic featuring 20 decks of endless entertainment and adventure.

A massive hit with kids of all ages is Thrill Island, the world's largest waterpark at sea. With immersive aqua park experiences like Storm Surge and Hurricane Hunter, there's plenty on offer to get your hearts pumping. For younger kids, Surfside provides a haven where kids up to age six can splash the day away at Splashaway Bay.

While the vast size of the ship may seem overwhelming, there are many relaxed and tranquil areas, like Central Park, so you can still jump into all the fun on board. I'd love to hang out at Swim & Tonic, the line's first swim-up bar, where I can sip and splash the day away.

With over 40 bars and restaurants to choose from on board, the only problem you're going to have is making your way around them all during your trip. There's food for even the fussiest of eaters, so you can avoid those hangry meltdowns.

MSC VIRTUOUSA
Best for:
Overall value
MSC Cruises is a great option for a fantastic family holiday. Their two or three-night mini cruises are ideal for families who want to dip their toes in the water while the line's no-fly cruises from Southampton will suit those who aren't keen on flying.

Kids of all ages can spend endless hours enjoying MSC Virtuousa's vast array of rides and slides, while back on dry land the Himalayan Bridge offers a range of fun obstacles to overcome (and mesmerising sea views). With the kids content, parents can indulge in some R&R time in the onboard spa.
